Explore how six Keep it Local principles can help health systems work with community organisations to support prevention and tackle health inequalities.

What is this guide and who is it for?

This Locality guide explores how Integrated Care Systems (ICSs) in England can work with local voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) organisations to improve health and wellbeing.

It brings together practical recommendations and case studies on joining up services, investing in communities and putting prevention first. It is aimed at health system leaders, commissioners and partners in councils and the VCSE sector.

Community organisations can use it to understand the approach and support conversations with local health partners.

What will I learn?

  • Understand how whole-system working can connect services around people rather than organisational boundaries.
  • Explore ways to co-ordinate health and wellbeing support at neighbourhood level.
  • Consider how spending with local organisations can strengthen the local economy.
  • Learn how community-led approaches can support prevention and address the wider factors affecting health.
  • Understand why local organisations need long-term support and funding that covers the full cost of delivery.
  • Explore simpler, collaborative commissioning that values local knowledge and community-led services.
